Fed: Cheap imports now passing off as Aust made: ACCI
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says cheap imports will be passed off
as good quality Australian-made goods under new legislation taking effect today.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the Copyright Amendment Act
should cut prices on imported goods as importers' monopolies come to an end.
Importers who are sole Australian distributors because they hold the copyright on a
product will now face competition.
But Chamber of Commerce chief executive MARK PATERSON says the act already needs changing,
because some imported goods are packaged to look like Australian-made brands.
He says consumers should look for the Australian Made logo to ensure they're not misled
into buying inferior imports.
