NSW: Torch heads to Muswellbrook

Tonight Muswellbrook softballer SUE FAIRHURST, who hopes to become the Hunter Valley
town's first gold medal winner as part of the national team next month, will carry the
Olympic torch through her hometown.

Earlier the torch was welcomed into the northern New South Wales town of Maitland with
one of the relay's biggest lunchtime crowds.

Some 25,000 fans turned out to greet the sacred flame in Maitland Park, carried by
1956 Olympic Games torchbearer and local resident DAVID HARWOOD.

A further 5,000 people lined the streets to watch the torch pass through Maitland Heritage Mall.

Australian singer CHRISTINE ANU and children's entertainer MONICA TRAPAGA headlined
torch relay celebrations in the park today.
