Fed: Hardgrave praises plan for English translation signs
The federal government has praised a proposal by a Sydney council to force businesses
to display English translations on their shopfront signage.
Fairfield Council, in western Sydney, is considering compulsory English signage for
shops in Cabramatta and Fairfield.
Federal Multicultural Affairs Minister GARY HARDGRAVE says the lack of English translation
on shopfront signage alienates some Australians who can't read foreign languages.
He says it makes good business sense to have signage that appeals to the broader community.
Mr HARDGRAVE says two other Sydney councils -- Hurstville and Auburn -- have already
introduced compulsory English signage.
