Fed: Gov't agrees to make change to stimulus package=2

Government frontbencher .. Senator NICK SHERRY .. says they haven't taken the decision
to reduce the payments lightly .. because they're essential to support growth and jobs
in the near term.

But he's told parliament that the government's decided on the small reduction .. which
maintains the overall effectiveness of the government's plan .. while taking into account
the views of others.

The government's trying to have parliament approve a package of measures aimed at heading
off a looming recession.
