Trivial Pursuit

Trivial Pursuit

Although board games have lost a great deal of popularity to their video counterparts, a few continue to capture the public's imagination and leisure time. Toward the end of the twentieth century, none was more successful than Trivial Pursuit.

As the name suggests, the game tests players' knowledge of obscure facts. In the basic game (known as the "Genus Edition"), the facts are divided into five categories: Art and Literature, History, Sports and Leisure, Geography, and Science and Nature. A die roll moves each player around a circular board, each square of which represents one of the five categories. Questions are contained on preprinted …

WATER WOES COULD FORCE RESIDENTS TO FLEE COHOES.(MAIN)

Byline: RITA M. JOHNSON Cohoes

Twenty-one years ago, my husband and I purchased a home in Cohoes. The water used for drinking and bathing was so bad, we had to go the expense of a water softener, and a reverse osmosis system for the drinking and cooking water. Both systems require periodic maintenance which is, in itself, costly.

Each year, both sewer and water charges for each six-month period have escalated. With our Jan. 1, 1997, to June 30, 1997, bill, we now have an added surcharge of $35.50, which supposedly is to help reduce the $1.5 million deficit in the city's budget. There are many families larger than ours, which use more water and therefore had …

First-ever hearing held on LGBT immigration equality

Senate, House up support as couples tell their stories

The U.S. Senate held the first-ever congressional hearing on GLBT immigration equality that would stop gay and lesbian families from being torn apart on June 3.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D- Vermont) introduced the Uniting American Families Act (S. 424) earlier this year; it has 18 cosponsors. The bill would allow same-sex couples the same immigration rights as married heterosexual couples. Passage of the bill is likely to be tied to overall immigration reform.

"The preservation of family unity is at the core of our immigration legal system. This American value must apply to all families . . . Federal policy should …

Ruling against Ford protects dealer turf.(Texas case outcome prevents Ford from selling used car from web site)(Brief Article)

A federal appeals court ruling last week is expected to make it even tougher for manufacturers to get into the retail business, even on the Web.

The U. S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans sided with a lower court that barred Ford Motor Co. from pricing and merchandising used vehicles on a Houston Web site. The courts upheld the Texas franchise law, which bans factory-owned dealerships and forbids factories from retailing vehicles.

``This was a hard-fought battle, and the stakes were high,'' said Bill Newman, COO of public and legal affairs for the National Automobile Dealers Association, which filed a brief in support of the Texas statute and helped argue the …
